Max Römer's work at Liceu Jaime Moniz

In 1922, the German painter Max Römer (1878-1960), born in Hamburg, arrived in Madeira, where he lived for thirty-eight years. In the Region he developed his activity as a portraitist of Madeiran customs and landscapes, works absorbed by both local and international commissions. In addition to painting, the artist was also a pioneer in the field of graphic arts on the island, producing a large quantity and diversity of works. Examples of this are the illustrations for the covers of books published in Funchal and for the covers of magazines; promotional postcards from Madeira, which are now in private collections all over the world; posters for movie sessions and commercial advertisements in the local press.

In 1943, Römer executed the mural set for the canteen of Liceu Jaime Moniz, now Jaime Moniz Secondary School, consisting of a frieze around the upper part of the walls, with typical Madeiran motifs.

In the academic year of 1943/44, the premises of the center n.º 3 of Mocidade Portuguesa were inaugurated, in the basement, in the new building of the Liceu Jaime Moniz. The reading room was decorated with paintings by Max Römer, with themes alluding to Portuguese Youth.

The Jaime Moniz Secondary School also has six paintings, signed by Max Römer and dated 1957.
